OUS approved ukulele teachers

We recommend the following individuals as great teachers for uke tuition

Grace Kathryn Fellows

If music inspires you to create, if songs speak to you, if you’re the cat that curiousity killed, Grace Fellows is the teacher for you. The California-based singer-songwriter teaches in person and online, specializing in students who are interested in learning songs and music theory, improvising, playing with others, recording their work, and writing original material, but don’t be shy if you’re a beginner! She can absolutely help you get the hang of common chords and strumming patterns, help you learn to hold and play the uke comfortably, answer all your questions and entertain all your musings.

If you’ve been playing a while, she can help you take your playing to the next level with movable shapes, chord extensions, fun picking patterns, and comprehensive music theory dialogue.

Grace also teaches voice and other instruments (piano, guitar, violin) which gives her a unique perspective on the uke’s capabilities and what it means to be a musician.

She holds a BFA in music from Calarts (2017) and in 2018 she released her first studio album under the moniker Towse.

To schedule your first lesson, email gracefellowsmusic@gmail.com, call or text (805)798-2086, or reach out to her on social media (come on now, don’t be shy!)

Jessica Bowie – Yorkshire – teaching groups and individuals

jessica bowie

Whether you are just beginning to learn the ukulele or are looking to get off the plateau of first position chords and calypso strumming and improve your basic skills, or even to learn more advanced techniques, I can help you.

I teach one to one lessons from my music room at home in Bramley, Leeds 13.

I also run small groups for Beginners, Improvers and a group for people with limited manual dexterity (older people and those with disabilities) using adapted ukuleles. Please contact me for information about the next 12 week courses for Beginners and Improvers Ukulele.

For those who have got the hang of the major, minor and 7th chords in the keys of C, F and G there is an opportunity to join one of my ukulele clubs in Leeds.

The Meanwood Institukes meet on Wednesdays 1:30pm – 3:30pm in Meanwood, Leeds 6. As well as playing and singing this group has a great social element, we drink tea and eat custard creams! On sunny days we play out in Meanwood Park!

The Ukulele Social Club meets on Thursdays 7:00pm – 9:00pm in Bramley, Leeds 13. As the name implies this is a lively social group who are friendly and fun. Sometimes after the group we go to the Chemic Tavern and to perform at the Cloth Cat open mic night.

Both groups offer opportunities to learn a vast array of sophisticated arrangements of popular and unusual songs spanning the last century. Both groups play a variety of concerts and festivals throughout the year.

“The ukulele is such fun – play, practice and most importantly enjoy!
